Black Screen during Citrix Shared Published or Virtual Desktop login

Black Screen when Connecting to VDI Shared Hosted Desktop or Virtual Desktop

Although the black screen when loading or connecting to a virtual desktop does not prevent connectivity to the hosted shared desktop or the dedicated virtual desktop, it does leave the user wondering what is going on when they click to start their VDI session. The black screen during  the startup or logon process to a virtual desktop also impedes troubleshooting during times when there are problems connecting.

I have used the following registry change that removes the black screen during logging in to the virtual desktop.  Instead of the black screen and the generic Citrix connection progress bar, users will see the windows login process. The registry change to remove the black screen during connections to virtual desktops can be applied to the hosted shared server or applied through group policy for all hosted shared (XenApp servers) or virtual desktops (XenDesktop).

Connecting to Citrix VDI Virtual Desktop User sees Black Screen.

Start the registry editor (click start run or Start Search regedit) and go to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Logon

Add the following REG_DWORD “DisableStatus” and give it the value “00000001” .

As mentioned this worked for me perfectly on several deployments.

The following or similar Citrix Progress indicator is replaced.

Standard Citrix Logon Progress Bar Indicator. Replace with Windows login Progress Information

Users will see as part of their user experience a more familiar Windows login progress.

Citrix users will see the standard Windows login progress instead of a black screen when starting up a VDI session.

One Response to Black Screen during Citrix Shared Published or Virtual Desktop login

This has worked for me for more than several deployments now and with a range of Xenapp/xendesktop versions. Preventing the black screen and showing login progress helps the user greatly because if the login is displayed as sometimes we know it is, they are not wondering what is going on and licking to start their desktop more than one time. Preventing the black screen makes the users less anxious during the login process.
